In an exciting day of Rugby Sevens on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland 1 has won the 2019 Aon National Youth Girls Sevens Championship title, while New South Wales 1 has again claimed the crown in the National Youth Boys Championship.

Queensland opened the scoring in the girl’s match before NSW quickly retaliated, scoring two back to back tries to give them a 10-5 lead at half time. Attacking the NSW defensive in the second half a back and forth contest ensued with Queensland prevailing 19-15.

It was a similar story in the Boys Final with NSW drawing first blood. Queensland struck next before NSW scored again taking them to a 12-7 lead at half time. NSW crossed the line off the kick-off before Queensland commenced their offensive with three minutes remaining. However, it was too little too late for the hosts, with NSW ended the match ahead 17-14.

In other matches, Western Australia took out the Bronze Medal in the Aon Youth Girls with Rueben Cherrington scoring a hat-trick to ensure their 17-12 win over NSW 2, while the ACT left Queensland 2 scoreless, 24-0 in the Youth Boys Bronze medal playoff to secure their place on the podium.

Ben Dowling from NSW 1 was named player of the tournament in the Youth Boys Championship, while Maddison Levi was named player of the tournament in the Aon Youth Girls.

Following on from the Championship, National Coaching staff will begin to finalise the National Youth Boys and Girls squads ahead of the World Schools 7s in Auckland, kicking off on December 13 in Auckland.
