Demi Hayes has been in the Rugby 7s system since she was a teenager after growing up as a touch footballer.

Born in the mining town of Mount Isa, Hayes grew up in the Darling Downs in Queensland’s south; firstly, at the family property near the town of Glenmorgan, then Warwick where she went to boarding school and Toowoomba.

She then moved from Toowoomba to Sydney in 2015 to join the Australian Youth Sevens squad after being introduced to the game by teammate Charlotte Caslick.

Hayes made her 7s debut against Brazil in 2016 and watched on as the team won a gold medal in Rio.

She was later selected for the 2020 Rio Games, making her Olympics debut.

Hayes unfortunately ruptured her ACL in Cape Town of the 2023/2024 SVNS season and is on track to return in 2025.
