Rugby Australia congratulates the Aussie Women’s Sevens team after they won the Rugby World Cup Sevens in Cape Town.

The triumph follows their HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series title, and their Gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, giving the team a perfect record for the 2021-22 season, and a historic “Triple Crown”.

The Aussie Men finished the Rugby World Cup in fourth place, following defeat to eventual champions Fiji at the Semi-Final stage, before falling 14-19 to Ireland in the Bronze play-off.

It has been a drought-breaking season for the Aussie Men too, winning the World Rugby Sevens Series for the first time.

A host of Australian players scored individual honours throughout the season, with Charlotte Caslick, Faith Nathan, Maddison Levi, Madison Ashby, Corey Toole and Nick Malouf all selected in their respective World Rugby Dream Teams.

Levi and Toole also claimed Rookie of the Year, while Caslick and Toole were awarded Impact Player of the Year.

Rugby Australia CEO Andy Marinos believes the Australian Women’s Sevens team could be Australia’s best sporting team.

“What an incredible season for our all-conquering Women’s Sevens team!” said Mr Marinos.

“They have entered the conversation as one of Australia’s greatest sporting teams today.

“In a massive year of international competition, with a full season of the HSBC Rugby Sevens Series, the Commonwealth Games, and the Rugby World Cup Sevens, they have won every major trophy available to them.

“An unbeaten record of international titles surely puts this team in the stratosphere of Australian sport.

“Congratulations to our Men’s team also… Things did not work out for them in Cape Town, but nothing can take away the fact that they are the first Australian team to win the Men’s World Rugby Sevens Series.

“On behalf of the Australian Rugby community, we are extremely proud of our Sevens teams’ achievements this year. They have delivered pure gold for our country today.”
