Both Qantas Australian Sevens teams have gone through day one of the HSBC Sydney 7s undefeated with the Aussie Women not having a point scored against them.
The Aussie Women were clinical in their opening two matches, racking up big scores against Spain and Ireland, led by Charlotte Caslick who was in top form in her return to International Rugby after a layoff with injury.
Caslick scored five tries across the day including a hattrick against Spain in a dominant return to form.
For the Aussie Men a strong start against Japan, led them to a see-sawing battle against Scotland with the men in gold reduced to six men.
Scotland tested Australia but some brilliance from Maurice Longbottom put the game beyond doubt for Australia, who will go into their final pool match tomorrow against USA.
Qantas Australian Women’s Sevens Head Coach, John Manenti said: “I think its always pleasing when you don’t concede points and I think most of our attack stemmed from good defence. If we get our defence right, we know we have a lot of attacking weapons to let lose.
“Charlotte has played really well throughout the day and gives us something really different. Alicia Lucas and Emilee Cherry playing around there and having composure, we can feed the speed.
“There will be a really tough challenge tomorrow morning against the French.”
Qantas Australian Men’s Sevens Head Coach, Tim Walsh said: “We’ve been really working hard on controlling momentum and our win today (against Scotland) is off the back of some solid defence and I’m really proud of the team.
“The USA are in form and are piling on the points. We will have to play a strategic game and bring the attitude for that match tomorrow morning.”
